As a corporate lawyer and civil-law notary, John Paans is involved in mergers and acquisitions, financing and restructurings as well as setting up joint ventures, partnerships and corporations. He also advises national and international companies on corporate governance issues from a Dutch corporate law perspective.
Corporate law, with particular emphasis on international restructurings, mergers and acquisitions. He is heading the Corporate M&A Group and works closely with other legal experts of Baker McKenzie (i.e. corporate, commercial, banking, tax, employment and intellectual property lawyers) both in Amsterdam and in other offices of Baker McKenzie.

Publications, presentations and articles
John Paans regularly publishes articles on recent developments related to Dutch and European corporate law. He also frequently organizes and speaks at internal and external courses in the field of corporate law.
John Paans is a member of the Royal Dutch Notaries’ Association (Koninklijke Notariële Beroepsorganisatie), the Amsterdam Legal Association (Amsterdams Juridisch Genootschap) and the Dutch Trade Commercial Law Association (Vereniging Handelsrecht), the Amsterdam Civil-law Notaries Society and the Dutch Corporate Finance Association.
John Paans started his career at the corporate department of a reputable Dutch law firm in 1995. In the summer of 1999 he joined the Amsterdam office of Baker McKenzie, where he specialized in the international corporate law practice. He was appointed local partner in July 2003. In December 2005 he was appointed by her Majesty Queen Beatrix as Civil-law Notary. John was appointed by the international partnership of Baker McKenzie as principal on July 2006.
Education and admission
John Paans completed his law studies at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 1994. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a degree in notarial law in 1997. In June 2001, John passed the Grotius Post Graduate Course in Financing and Securities and in the summer of 2003 he obtained a certificate for the Grotius Post Graduate Course named “Corporate Structures”.
